Butec (buprenorphine) patch

Butec® is the NHSGGC preferred brand of buprenorphine 7 day transdermal patch across primary and secondary care. It is restricted to specialist use only in elderly patients (over 65 years) where standard analgesic options are ineffective or not tolerated.

In January 2017 the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) advised that buprenorphine transdermal patches (Butec®) were accepted for restricted use within NHS Scotland. There are several brands of buprenorphine transdermal patches, but this is the only one accepted for use by SMC and on the Formulary. The different brands are not all interchangeable and can vary in relation to the frequency of application. To avoid confusion and the potential for dosing errors, buprenorphine transdermal patches should be prescribed by brand name.

Patients on BuTrans® can be safely switched to Butec at the next supply.

Buprenorphine patches which are replaced after 3 or 4 days are available for other indications, but remain non-formulary in NHSGGC.
